An appropriate maximum CO2 insufflation pressures for pediatric laparoscopic surgery would be:

a) 5

b) 15

c) 20

d) 25

e) 30

Click for Answer

Answer

Answer b. In general, higher insufflation pressure results in improved surgical field visualization and lower pressure results in improved hemodynamics/venous return. Insufflation pressures greater than 15 may result in significant perturbations of physiology (particularly in infants), but 5 or less is unlikely to provide adequate exposure.
