Answer c. Needle sticks above the inguinal ligament increase the risk for retroperitoneal hematoma associated with femoral central venous line placement. Knowledge of the relative position of femoral artery, vein and nerve are important, especially if obtaining venous access without ultrasound guidance. The nerve is lateral to the artery, which in turn is lateral to the vein.
