You have a patient that is actively bleeding and you have elected to administer fresh frozen plasma. Which of the following blood types is considered the universal donor in this situation?

A. O negative

B. O positive

C. AB negative

D. AB positive

The answer is C (and D). Now THIS is a tricky question. First, we are talking about FFP. Purified plasma will contain the bulk of the antigens (which all types-especially O will have against other blood types). The AB blood group is the only type that will NOT have antigens directed at other blood components. The Rh status doesn't really matter as the Rh antigen is on red cells and you are transfusing plasma.
